NAGA, the mythical snake said to be the source of the Ping River of Chiang Mai.
Flanked by tremendous nagas, which symbolizes humanity’s progress from earth into Nirvana, the 309 steps staircase leads up to the temple of Wat Prathat Doi Suthep.
The temple is said to have been founded in 1383, where a piece of relic, believed to be the Lord Buddha’s shoulder bone, is enshrined. Over time the temple has been expanded more extravagant with many more holy shrines added, including the golden 16th century stupa, the landmark of today’s Chiang Mai.
